A very common reason people delay selling their gold is a belief that they need a stack of paperwork — purchase receipts, original bills, certificates. The reality is far simpler.
The One Document You Actually Need
By law (under PMLA and RBI KYC norms), a gold buyer in India needs to collect one valid government-issued photo ID before completing a purchase. That is:
- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
- Voter ID
- Driving Licence
- Passport
Any one of the above is sufficient. You do not need all of them.
💡 Good news: No purchase receipt, original jewellery bill, or hallmark certificate is required by law to sell your gold. If a buyer demands these, they are either confused about the law or using it as a tactic to lower your rate.
What About the Original Purchase Bill?
You do not need it. Gold value is assessed on weight and purity — not on what you originally paid or where you bought it. A chain purchased in 1990 for ₹800 and the same chain purchased last year for ₹80,000 will receive the same payout if the weight and karat are identical.
What About Inherited Jewellery?
